Big fly, small fish...

It is considered top sport to catch a big fish with light tackle, thin line and small hook. Sometime the wrong things are happening — with a serious tackle one is catching something small, or very small. Some fish from our catches fit a matchbox with only a tail sticking out.

Reflections

The fish dwell in water, and the water is often works like a mirror – or a lens.  I want to share some interesting optical instants which I was lucky to see during some outdoor trips.  The eyes of a live fish reflect its surroundings.  We underestimate the quality of these reflections – due to the small size and curvature of the “mirrors” the image is very small.

Here you can see an attempt to magnify my own image from the eye of a 2 kg lenok.

The Elgygytgyn Lake - a meteorite crater!

I have put together all information and photographs on the biggest of the young meteorite craters of the Earth - the Elgygytgyn impact structure.  This crater is situated at 68 degrees North in Chukotka; it is 12 miles across.  The impact had formed a lake where some unique fish were discovered.

Do the released fish really survive?

In the last years in the Russian sport-fishing community the arguments between the supporters and opponents of the catch-and release fishing are becoming more intense.  Here I want present different opinions on the topic same as the true stories on the fish which were caught several times.

Siberian Holey Head Flies

These flies are very popular among the fishermen of the Eastern Siberia and Far East, and in other regions of Russia not many people know what it is about.  Here you could find out how to make your own “tinheads” -  Holey Head flies. These flies are the ancestors of well-known goldhead nymphs; they are made on the hooks with soldered heads.
Do you want to see the know-how on these hooks?

Testing of an interesting new rod

In summer-fall 2011 I was able to test an interesting new rod of the "trout spey" class.  The 3-4 wt 5-piece rod is lightweight (122g or 4.3 oz); it was made by a Russian firm Kola Salmon.  It could be also used with 5 or 6 weight single-handed lines.  I am using this rod with dry and wet flies, streamers, and nymphs.

New book on the flyfishing the Russian Far East

In 2007 I have published a book on the flyfishing the Russian Far East (in Russian).  For the last years I was working on the English edition of this 300+ page color book.  Finally the work is coming to the end.  I am sure that in 2012 it will be printed and offered to the readers.  How will it look?  I do not know it yet.  The cover of the Russian edition is below.

Amur Winter

The winter had come, and huge river is freezing over. This time a fishermen does not have much choice: either tying flies and dreaming on the summer, or ice-fishing. I like both.
